New York Attorney General, Eric T. Schneiderman, released a list of the top 10 consumer fraud complaints that were received by the Attorney General’s Office in 2013. It appeared that internet-related complaints took the lead as it topped the list and had 4,753 complaints. Automobile-related scams and credit card billing complaints were not too far behind resulting in over 2,000 complaints.
In a statement, Attorney General Schneiderman said “My office will use every legal tool at our disposal to hold fraudsters and unscrupulous businesses accountable, and to protect consumers from their deceptive practices.” Attorney General Schneiderman encourages all New Yorkers who believe they have been the victim of a scam to contact his office. He believes it is imperative to take all necessary precautions to prevent scams before they start.
Be aware and don’t become the next victim of a scam. Remember, it is important to protect yourself and be mindful of scams anytime you are giving your credit card information and personal information over the phone or through the internet.
